Against All Odds
If you’ve been walking with Jesus for any length of time, you’ve probably realized that this journey isn’t always a smooth one. There are times when it feels like everything is working against your faith—temptation, trials, rejection, persecution, and even internal battles. Sometimes you wonder, “Why is it so hard to do what’s right?” or “Am I the only one going through this?”
But let me encourage you with this simple truth: you are not alone.
The early church, those first followers of Christ, faced unimaginable odds. They were mocked, hunted down, thrown in prison, tortured, and even killed—all because they chose to follow Jesus. And yet, against all odds, the church grew. Against all odds, the gospel spread. Against all odds, they remained faithful.
So today, as we face our own challenges, let’s look back at what they went through and draw strength from their example. Their story is not just history—it’s a testimony that we, too, can overcome whatever comes our way.
When Facing Persecution
The early church didn’t have the luxury of comfort or cultural acceptance. Christianity wasn’t a recognized religion. In fact, it was often treated as a dangerous cult. Followers of Jesus were considered troublemakers—disrupting the peace, refusing to worship Roman gods, and calling someone other than Caesar "Lord."
Acts 5 tells us how the apostles were arrested, beaten, and strictly warned not to preach in Jesus' name. But guess what they did? They kept preaching. Why? Because the gospel was more valuable to them than comfort or even their lives.
Fast forward to today, and while you may not be getting flogged on the streets, persecution still exists. Maybe you’re being mocked at work for your faith. Perhaps you’re being shut out by family for standing on God’s Word. Maybe you're in a place where identifying as a Christian could cost you your safety.
But here’s the good news: you’re in good company. Jesus said in Matthew 5:11-12,
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven…”
That’s not just poetic language. It’s a divine reminder that what we face here is temporary, but the reward is eternal.
When It Just Hurts
Let’s be honest—sometimes walking with Christ hurts. The early believers experienced deep pain, not just physically, but emotionally too. They lost homes, friendships, family ties, and even their lives. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was stoned to death while preaching truth (Acts 7). And as the stones were hurled at him, he prayed for his killers.
How do you keep your faith in moments like that?
You remember the hope that lies beyond the pain. The apostle Paul, who was no stranger to suffering—beatings, shipwrecks, hunger, imprisonment—wrote in Romans 8:18,
“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”
That’s the mindset that carried the early church. They weren’t just focused on what they could see; they were focused on eternity. So when you’re hurting, when life feels unfair, remember: God sees your pain, and He’s using it for glory that far outweighs the weight you feel now.
When People Turn Away
Have you ever felt the sting of rejection simply because you’re trying to live for God?
The early Christians knew that pain well. Many of them were disowned by their families. In some Jewish communities, becoming a follower of Jesus meant being kicked out of the synagogue and treated as an outcast. In the Roman world, Christians were seen as traitors for refusing to honor the emperor as a god.
Jesus Himself wasn’t immune to rejection. Isaiah 53:3 describes Him as
“despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief…”
So if you’ve been unfriended, excluded, or even betrayed because of your walk with God—don’t be discouraged. You're walking the same path your Savior did. And you are never, ever truly alone.
The Battle Within
Let’s not sugarcoat it—temptation is real. The early church had to fight it too. Living in pagan cultures filled with idolatry, sexual immorality, greed, and corruption made it easy to compromise. And many believers were tempted to blend in, to hide their faith, or to go back to their old ways.
Paul constantly warned against this, urging believers to live holy lives. In Galatians 5, he talks about the war between the flesh and the Spirit. That struggle wasn’t unique to them—it’s still very real today.
But here’s the truth: temptation doesn’t mean you're weak. It just means you're human. And God has not left you powerless. 1 Corinthians 10:13 gives this assurance:
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear…”
That means even in the heat of temptation, God provides a way out. And every time you choose righteousness over compromise, you grow stronger.
When the World Is Against You
The early Christians were often hated—not for doing evil, but for doing good. They were hated for loving Jesus, for preaching truth, for standing against moral decay. And sometimes, they were used as scapegoats for things they didn’t even do (like Nero blaming them for the great fire of Rome).
Jesus warned us this would happen. In John 15:18, He said:
“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.”
Hatred can be hard to take. It makes you question if it’s worth it. But if you're facing hostility because you're standing for what is right and true, that’s a sign you're on the narrow path—and that’s the path that leads to life.
Still Standing Against All Odds
Despite everything they faced—persecution, pain, rejection, temptation, hatred—the early church didn’t die out. It grew stronger. And here we are, over 2,000 years later, still talking about the same Jesus they served.
Why? Because God is faithful. Because His Spirit empowers His people. Because when everything is against you, He is for you.
And the same power that sustained them is available to you today.
Hebrews 12:1-2 puts it beautifully:
“
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders... and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
Those “witnesses” include Peter, Paul, Stephen, Lydia, and countless unnamed believers who held on to Jesus—against all odds. And now it’s your turn.
Your Story Isn’t Over
Maybe today you’re tired. Maybe you’re discouraged, wondering if it’s worth it. Maybe you feel like you're barely holding on.
But take heart, friend. The same God who sustained the early church is sustaining you. The same Spirit that empowered them empowers you. And the same victory they lived for is the one you’re headed toward.
So don’t give up.
When the world mocks you—keep loving.
When your heart breaks—keep believing.
When you’re tempted—keep choosing truth.
When you feel alone—remember you are surrounded by a family of faith across generations and continents.
Yes, the odds may be against you.
But the God who holds the odds is fighting for you.
Final Thoughts
We live in a time where the world often pulls us away from the things of God. But the flame of faith that burned in the early church still burns in us today. It's not easy. It's not always popular. But it's worth it.
So wherever you are in your walk—whether you're standing strong or struggling to stay upright—remember this:
- You are part of a kingdom that cannot be shaken.
- You are loved by a Savior who never fails.
- And you are not walking alone.
Keep going. Keep trusting. Keep shining.
Against all odds, we win.
